About Jason

I'm a recent graduate of UCLA with an M.S. in computer science. Before attending graduate school fulltime, I worked at the L.A. Times for over eight years as a Senior Editor for Digital. I kept an eye on the website content management system, made websites and webpages, trained journalists on how to use various technologies and did a little bit of writing. Before the L.A. Times, I worked for Yahoo! News. As for my undergraduate learnings, I earned a B.A. in history from Yale.

I enjoy expressing ideas and making things, whether through words and photos (above, a photo of Bryce Canyon National Park I captured during the winter) or lines of code. Mostly the latter nowadays.

PORTFOLIO

Websites and Pages

Travel Just Right

This website that started as a class project I worked on in a group of four, and I've built on it in my spare time. For the site, I did front- and backend programming using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AngularJS and Java.

A full view of Half Dome

An example of the types of webpages I created with HTML and CSS during my time at the Los Angeles Times. More examples from this series here. A few pages on the above link were created by others, but I created most.

170 holiday gift ideas

An L.A. Times webpage created in HTML and CSS I made with a group of web editors and producers for our annual gift guide.

Thomas Keller: A chef for all seasons

An example of the types of webpages I created with HTML and CSS during my time at the Los Angeles Times. This was for a series called Master Class for the Food section.

Standing before the Lone Cypress

Lily Tam Interiors

A WordPress website I created for a friend. It uses one of their pre-made templates. As far as I know, Lily hasn't started using this website yet, so it's full of boilerplate. She's been busy.

Mobile Apps

Sith With Me Meditation Timer

This is a mediation timer with a chiming feature that was not previously available for free on similar iOS apps. This was my second iOS app and my first solo app. The app has gotten almost 400 downloads so far.

Political Fact or Fiction

This is a trivia game I created it with a friend for an app contest. I wrote most of the questions for the app, set up the real-time database to store the questions and helped code the app. My friend and I co-designed it.

Stress Detection System

A watchOS and iOS app I made that uses machine learning to model and detect stress. It uses features such as heart rate (and related measurements), time, contextual motion and physical activity for modeling. The app is still in progress, but you can read abou it here, or view this diagram.

Graphics

3D game/animation

This is a 3D game I created for a real-time animation class. I created the game using the Unity game engine, version 5. The game was coded using C#.

WebGL animation

A two-minute 3D animation I made with JavaScript and WebGL. This involved manipulating shaders as well as creating my own shapes and textures.
